Morgan Walsh always dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. Now she has something special to add to her portfolio: a dress designed from toilet paper for a recent New York Fashion Week runway show.
Walsh, a student in the fashion and textile technology program at SUNY Buffalo State, was commissioned to design the dress by the Cottonelle brand after submitting sketches. The brand was in search of a fashion student to design a dress as part of its “Let’s Talk About Your Bum” campaign.
Using an estimated 20 to 23 rolls of Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care Toilet Paper, Walsh created her dress.
“It sewed really well together. It was kind of amazing," she said. “I would take the roll and get about a yard of it, fold it in half lengthwise and sew panels together to make my fabric. It’s obviously pretty durable.”
Using her own pattern, she made a bodice and skirt and then added the zipper and pleats.
“The whole skirt was covered in toilet paper pleats, and there were some down the front of the bodice. I put smaller pleats on either side of the zipper in the back,” said Walsh, 25, who traveled twice to New York – first for the pre-show fitting and again for the show itself.
But she didn’t stop with the dress. Walsh, a Buffalo native, also created a grommet-covered clutch out of the brand’s Flushable Cleansing Cloths dispenser.
The dress and clutch were modeled last weekend by Mom Blogger Cait Beauchaine at the Mercedes-Benz Stage venue at Lincoln Park during Strut: the Fashionable Mom Show. New York Fashion Week ended Thursday.
